Patio Pattern & Stairs

An attractive border pattern can make an otherwise plain patio pop with a little excitement.

Tiling over Old Tiles & New Concrete

The front Terrazzo Patio was extended with concrete. The Terrazzo tiles could be simply tiled on top of once they were suitable prepared. The thick and solid Terrazzo tiles were roughed up with a grinder and then Mapei Eco Prim Grip sealer was applied. This primer sticks to almost anything, dries quick and provides a lot of grip for the cement glue due to the sand grains mixed in with it. A 300mm grey tile was used with a pattern tile of the same size for a border. Getting the tiled surface flat proved to be time consuming as the cemented side of the patio was a different height and gradient. A great deal of glue was necessary where the new concreted patio extension met the old terrazzo tiled patio. Another complication was that the horizontal Terrazzo tiles overhung the vertical tiles on the sides and so a great deal more glue was used (along with tile off-cuts) to fill the space. Nevertheless the finished product looked very good. Aluminium trim was used to protect the leading edges.

The Terrazzo & Concrete Surfaces

Concrete slab to extend Patio also needs to be tiled. Unfortunately it is not quite level or on the same incline.

Roughing up and priming

Terrazzo needs roughening up and priming using Mapei Prim Grip. This stuff can even stick to glass and is impregnated with sand for an excellent roughened surface for the glue to adhere to. The Concrete can be primed with a standard latex primer.

Gluing tiles to Patio

Using Davco SMP Evo cement based glue which has very high bond strength and is excellent for wet areas and outdoors and is designed for high grade porcelain or marble etc. Many tilers do not like it because it does not fluff up so much when mixed because they want to do the job as cheaply as possible. However I prefer my jobs to last. The customer chooses the tiles and the look that they are after for the price they are willing to pay. But I want to ensure that the tiles stay put and require the least maintenance etc.

On this job it was a mission to get everything flat. The pictures do not sure the large vertical gap (about 20mm) between the concrete and terrazzo tiles. Neither do they show the different inclines between these two surfaces. These factors greatly slowed down the tiling. However the finished product was a nice even tiled surface.

Gluing Tiles to Stairs & Patio Sides, then Grouted

The Terrazzo stairs had a horizontal overhang of about 20mm over the steps riser. This vertical gap of the riser needed to be filled with roughed up tile offcuts and glue in order for the new riser tile to fit securely. There were also tiles around the edge of the patio that had the same gap and required filling.
Once all the tiles were glued, the job could be grouted.

Waterproofing a Bathroom

Before the tiles go on and go up, there is some very important preparation that must be made for wet areas >>>> WATERPROOFING!

Bathrooms
get wet,

Tiles
get wet,

glue under tiles
gets wet!

Yes that is correct. Moisture gets under tiles that are glued and grouted.

That is why it is essential to have wet areas adequately waterproofed.

Fill the Gaps

The following gaps need to be filled in to prevent moisture from getting into the plasterboard. Polyurethane sealer is used and then a bandage is painted in with the the waterproofing membrane.

Laying the tiles

The customer did the wall prep including the waterproofing. I would have liked straighter walls and a few other things.

The floor tiles were a composite terrazzo type tile about 20mm thick so a common score and snap cutter wasn't up to the job, it required a wet saw. The floor was laid in two parts, first the entrance and then the walk in shower area. This had an incline, not from the ensuite doorway side but down from a toilet area that was in the opposite corner from the door. Once these tiles were cut and glued we had all the incline we needed to drain the water into it's square mouthed exit. Tiles were cut on angles to provide the fall from every side.

Then it was simply a matter of putting up the 300 x 600 mm white ceramic wall tiles including the shower box area and Aluminium trim.

Gas Heater & Kitchen Splashback

The customer wanted to add a bit of pizazz to kitchen and living room via some tiles that would add a bit of contrast to the pastel walls.

A new Gas Heater 'chimney' was added with a cement sheet base for the 600 x 600 mm tiles.

Kitchen Splashback

The previous tiles were drab. Instead of removing them their surface was roughed up with a grinder and the new 330 x 600 tiles were glued on. Above the first row of tiles a cement sheet was glued and screwed into the wall to raise the surface to the same level as the new tiles as they were no tiles around this area previously.

Completed Tiled Patio in regular use.
The customer wanted to turn a bare concrete Patio and path to the clothes line into something a little more exciting. The chose a 300x600 mm Porcelain tile to do the job. An aluminium L shaped trim was added to protect the edge of the tiles.

The concrete job was quite good with no major bumps providing a nice flat surface to tile. The concrete was sealed before tiles were glued down.
There was a drain by the garage door that had been quite low. We decided to follow the contours slightly, while removing most of the unnecessary fall.

Laundry & Toilet 600x600

4/5/2018

Pretty standard 600x6000mm porcelain tile on cement sheet job. Large laundry and toilet including a feature wall.

There was one part of the floor which needed to be packed under the floor between the floor joists above studs where water had leaked. This packing which I performed prevented the floor from bouncing in that area. Tiles are not supposed to bounce!

All the tiles had the same pattern on them but it was printed on different locations (i.e. the 'picture' was bigger than the tile and so it was printed so that no two tiles had exactly the same print). I opted to put one tile facing opposite to the next.

After cement sheeting and applying sealer I layed out the centre walkway area tiles to see where best to start and finish the tile line for the most practical and aesthetically pleasing look.

Getting around the toilet feature wall was a bit of a fiddle but the end result was good. Finally grouting completed the job.

The customer was very happy. I said the room was too nice for a laundry. It was big and bright and happy.

Marble Ensuite with ceramic wall tiles

24/11/2017

Customer lined their ensuite and removed old tiles from floor.
I needed to smooth off the floor before laying the cement sheet tile underlay. The customer wanted the walk in shower base area expanded which required some extra cement sheet strips and packing. All of this was then corked and sealed with latex based sealer and then two coats of waterproofing were applied over two days.

The marble floor tiles were selected for quality and layed out for the best overall fit. Edge tiles were cut with a wet-saw and glued using Davco SMP Evo.

Then the wall tiles were layed and topped with decorative trim tiles. Finally the wall and floor were grouted.

Customer's Testimonial...

"Very impressed with tiling Rory just completed in our ensuite renovation. Not an easy project with marble floor tiles. I would recommend Rory to anyone, Rory was punctual, communicated well, prices within our budget and a quality of finish higher than our expectations. Well done, looking forward to our next room to reno."
